Another Onan Problem

The Onan KY microlite 4000 generator in my RV runs, we turned the A/C the other day the circuit breaker tripped, the A/C quit. any ideas. I have reset the breaker switch.

This is a 2005 Jamboree 26Q. Have had several problems with the Generator, Also had it in the shop and replaced the carburetor 3 times.

Also this unit has solar on it.

I don't know if this applies or not. with the solar you have all power functions still running of inventor making you think power is restored with the sub panel breaker. with exception of AC.

I'd suspect you flipped the genny breaker. go to the genny and pull the panel off there is a master breaker that probably tripped. happened to me once all was well again.

Did u start the genny with the ac on? there is a high load and it makes it difficult to start could have tripped the breaker as well.

No I usually let the generator run for a few minutes before I start the A/C unit.
I did reset the circuit breaker on the generator. Right now I am dealing with other problems that are more important (Family health matters.) than the Generator.

Thank you for the replies. I will deal with it when I have the time.

  • Try this PatrickA51,

Run the generator for 15 minutes with the breaker on the generator turned on and the a/c turned off. After the 15 minutes have passed and everything else 110v turned off, turn on the a/c unit incrementally, assuming you have a thermostat like ours shown below. Note the hi/low fan speed, and the fan ON/Auto. I think the fan "ON" will run the fan without the a/c pumping out cold air. Try that first. You want to slowly increase the power requirement.

Running the generator for 15 minutes is what I do before starting the a/c unit, but only the first time for the season. If I don't, the breaker on the generator might trip.
  • Could be a bad transfer switch. Unless you do not have one, then you must have the power cord connected to the 30 amp receptacle. If you just want to run the a/c, you should be able to run it off a 110 ac cord from your house and be able to crank up the generator.

Why is that posed as a question ?

Don't you KNOW which breaker is tripping ?? and that it happens every time ???
  • Replace the breaker on the Generator if the AC runs fine on shore power.
They can get weak. Or maybe you need a hard start on the AC.

    The obvious answer is:
Nothing wrong with your generator; the A/C has failed or the breaker is bad.
Which breaker is it that trips ?

Might be interesting to see what happens on shore power.

When we turn on the A/C the generator quits putting out power, but it still runs. I had this happen once before when we first got the RV. I reset the circuit breaker on the Onan Generator and no problem , but now it keeps tripping when you turn the A/C on?

I need to take the RV where I can hook to shore power. (Maybe go to the Elks Lodge for the week end)

  • I would find a Coach Care shop. They are Cummins/Onan. They have never failed to fix our generators.
