Usersmanual,
With all due respect, this is not just my opinion. It has been reported that the average ownership of a DP is somewhere around 18 months. That includes many who trade in. So owning for a short term is not so unusual. Lots of folks trade in when they realize what they purchased does not fit their needs.
In fact I just met someone a few weeks ago at a repair shop in Elkhart, who to my amazement purchased a brand new DP to travel 18 months and is now selling it. What do you think this guy is going to lose!!!! I personally could never imagine doing this but different strokes for different folks. He is happy with his discussion.
As for the OP, maybe you can clarify this, could be that if ownership was not so expensive he/she would consider keeping the DP.
Also, I would almost guarantee (I could be wrong) that most DP owners do not do their own maintenance, oil change, chassis lube, etc. I do not think I am in the minority but I have told many people my favorite tool I carry is my credit card.
As for the cost of doing the yearly maintenance I just had it done on my coach a few weeks ago at Marv & Toms in Elkhart, IN. This place is considered one of the good deal places, far less expensive than Cummins, etc. I paid over $800 for this one time service which included: coach engine Oil and filter, 2 fuel filters, one hydraulic filter, air filter, air dryer, chassis lube. Also included was genny service, oil & filter, air filter and fuel filter.
So, $800 for two services which probably covered more than just an oil change. This is one expensive hobby. If you are not prepared for that you better get ready for a rough road.
One really nice thing about living in the coach is I no longer need to pay real estate taxes anymore.
