A code reader to access the transmission that year is fairly expensive, the kind a dealer or transmission shop has. It seems the only way is to spend some money and get a diagnoses of what the problem may be. As others have said, it may be a solenoid problem or an internal leak causing the problem. You may have to have some pressure testing done to isolate the problem(s).
