I cut a piece of plywood to length today, and cut it just a hair long. So, I setup my straight edge to remove just a little more.

Here you can see how minimal the amount of plywood was, that I wanted to remove. It was only about 1/8", and I knew I had no chance of cutting that straight without a straight edge to guide the saw.
The pencil mark is where the edge of the saw would be, without taking any material off at all.
