If you are already living on an isolated farm you may, maybe survive. If you are living in an urban area, two things will happen, a large number will 'die in place' as they have no coping skills beyond looting and when everything is gone from the shelves, they will perish, a small number will attempt to leave and head out to those isolated farms. Do you think that you'll be welcomed? Maybe if you have marketable skills, Medical, Carpenter, Mason, Butcher, Farmer. IT? not so much. Keep in mind an EMP will essentially fry all electronics and that includes your inverter, your ignition system your phones, radios, computers etc. We will be functioning at a level around 1860 AFTER we get started. Take a look at something as simple as flour. Ever visit a working grist mill? They were an incredible example of the millwrights trade. Not 1 in 1000 people today that think they are mechanics or craftsmen could build one.
Now short term inconvenience? No problem. We weathered Sandy, 7 days no power, ran the genset a few hours a day to keep the frig cold and as it cooled down we wired in the circulator pump on the boiler to heat the house. Couldn't run the well, no 220V. We made the week, a couple more days would have been an issue.
And we live in an area where the damage was limited to trees don taking our large areas of the power grid and blocking roads. We didn't have damage to residences here.
Being prepared really boils down to having a week of food and water and enough blankets to keep warm, if it goes much longer all but a very few better pray the Government is there and we will get a return on a lifetime of investing in it!
