Sorry folks, I did not say torque was not a major component to engine performance. As was shown by the equation, horsepower = torque X rpm /5252. The more torque you have the more HP you have. Also the higher rpm equals more HP.
A engine running at 2000 RPM and 300 foot pounds of torque has the same HP as a engine running at 1000 RPM and 600 foot pounds of torque. But it power vs. load that determines how fast things get done. In the case of a MH it is HP vs. weight. Again I designed engines for 35 years so I do have some experience in this field. I am sorry for what a sales person may have told some of you about torque. In the real world do you hear people at NASCAR or a drag strip talk about HP or torque. Why can a KIA Soul accelerate faster than a loaded Semi, which has 8 or 10 times the torque? If you have more interest there are several sites you can "goggle". one of them is" Horsepower design equation formula calculator". Please note that the inputs on all these sites is HP and weight and they talk about all different weight vehicles, not just cars.
