I go by hours, not miles. If I just want to get fnom A to B and I have someone to share the driving -- I still try to keep it down to 6 or 7 hours. 12 hours is my idea of hell.
By myself, just exploring and camping, I'm more likely to drive an hour in the morning and an hour after lunch and that's it.
To me, a key is: Don't drive every day. Maybe every third day.
