You'll want to keep that AWD the van has. It will go places that a 4WD won't go. Back in 93-95 when we got the big snows up in the Northeast my big ole 4WD pickup was stuck in my driveway. My AWD Astro drove right around it and got me to work (I was a lineman). That van amazed me everytime I took it out in deep snow. It drove like the snow was not even there. I had probably 4 different Astro/Safari's from 87 thru 2003. I used them to tow boats, Pop-ups and one 20 ft TT. Just had to make sure you got the 3.73 rears.

Because of its truck based design, the Astro also is popular with some off road and camping enthusiasts. The combination of a powerful drivetrain, large cargo and passenger space, all-wheel drive, and optional locking differential for the rear axle facilitate off road modifications. The suspension can be lifted, allowing larger tires and clearance with relatively small changes in exterior appearance.
