We use and enjoy our manual awning frequently, including sitting under it during moderate rain storms. I try to get a feel for the area we are set up in by observing what the longer term campers are doing. If their awnings appear to have been deployed for quite awhile, I don't get too paranoid about mine. I do keep a careful eye on the weather in any event, and err on the side of caution by retracting it if there's any question in my mind about leaving it out.
