besides locking the ends, I cut a 5" inch length (approx) of PVC pipe close to the diameter of the roller. Then take out approx an inch or so (not a complete circle) and snap it over the roller. I used 5 of them on a 20 foot awning equally spaced.
Probably a PITA but it worked for me. One only has to have an awning unfurl while still in place to not want it to happen again.
