Base Idle, Fast Idle, Non Idle - Best Practices Diesel

What are best practices for idling and what are the theories behind them. For example, I never use my base idle speed unless I'm in traffic or at a red light. Otherwise, I'll high idle (1,000 RPMs) ...

Why is it not a good idea to idle a DP engines when diesel trucks idle for hours. I talked to a trucker and he said the only time he turns the engine off is when he's having it serviced. Truckers idle them over night all the time. What's the difference?? Thanks
