I believe much of the high idle thinking is left over from the olden days of diesel. these new computer controlled engine are smarter than many who operate them.
I see no valid reason to fix some thing which isn't broke.
Or should I fix it until it is?
The manual says to not idle for long periods of time, but doesn't offer any guidance on what that means. The computer doesn't care and doesn't control this. It will let us slow idle until we run out of fuel.
What exactly do you think we are trying to fix?
I don't believe the manufacturer's will ever get down to the minutes/seconds something should or should not be done. Too many different situations that a vehicle could be in from application to weather related. In most cases it's difficult to get people to follow the limited schedule they do offer up in the manuals. From writing standard operating procedures at the company I worked for I understand the difficulty in anticipating every situation.
