Base Idle, Fast Idle, Non Idle - Best Practices Diesel

What are best practices for idling and what are the theories behind them. For example, I never use my base idle speed unless I'm in traffic or at a red light. Otherwise, I'll high idle (1,000 RPMs) ...

Interesting, I always learn something from all the bickering that goes on! I have had my first coach and diesel for about 18 months. It did not have a manual. I was told by the salesman to go to high idle to get the air to come up faster and that was it. Thank you for your differing opinions, they are informative.
