Base Idle, Fast Idle, Non Idle - Best Practices Diesel

What are best practices for idling and what are the theories behind them. For example, I never use my base idle speed unless I'm in traffic or at a red light. Otherwise, I'll high idle (1,000 RPMs) ...

holstein 13, There is always the option of moving to Yuma Arizona in the wintertime to keep your engine warm or putting the engine heater on a timer about 2 hours before you plan to start it. :)
