First, are they your kids and in that case, they'll be with you on every trip, or are you grandparents taking the kids on a few trips?
Also, how old are the children?
As far as using national forest campgrounds in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico... we easily fit our 40' motorhome in many campgrounds in those states.
Since you've had a motorhome and 5th wheel previously, you must know the amount of space each can have. Bunk models are very popular now. If you have to convert a dining table to a bed, that's a pain and is only good for small children. Likewise, having to make up the sofa every night limits the time you can stay up and early risers might be inconvenienced. I guess, to me, a toy hauler or something with bunks would be ideal if kids traveled with you all the time. A truck camper would be out.
