The original Diesel engine (invented by Rudolph Diesel, who corresponded with George Washington Carver while designing it) ran on peanut oil. It's an interesting story that led to a demonstration at the World's Fair in St. Louis.
In the Army in the 80's we had 2&1/2 ton and 5 ton trucks that were designated as multi-fuel. A suggested Officer Professional Development (OPD) lesson involved taking one that was bound for services and use filtered (through a t-shirt) fryer oil from the mess hall, drive it a bit, then use Kerosene, Avgas and Mogas. Then go change the oil, filters etc. It was pretty cool. it's my understanding that everything runs on JP8 now though.
BTW, my owners manual on a 340 Cummins says up to B20 is OK. We tested a city bus at work a couple of years ago by running it on a Biodiesel blend that was at least B20, maybe B30 or more over the course of several months. I liked driving it. It ran smoother and smelled better than our petro-diesel buses.
I have a much bigger problem with DEF however. It simply galls me to pay $5 a gallon for cattle urine to make some tyrannical eco nut feel better. Can these Carbon-banners identify any lifeform anywhere in the known universe that is not Carbon-based? Fortunately, my diesel engine is pre-DEF.
