A suggested Officer Professional Development (OPD) lesson involved taking one that was bound for services and use filtered (through a t-shirt) fryer oil from the mess hall, drive it a bit, then use Kerosene, Avgas and Mogas. Then go change the oil, filters etc.
They had them in the Reserves BEFORE the 80's....I drove one in an Engr Support Co in the early to mid 70's....then made Platoon Sgt and didnt drive anymore.
And as sure as shooting...if it would burn...they could run on it.
