Black tank sensor fixes itself: cure or remission?

On our last trip, the black tank sensor got stuck on 2/3 full, which led to a lot of emptying of a partially full tank. Fast forward a month, as I was filling the fresh water tank, and I noticed that the black tank sensor is now reading empty, as it should.

I know the answer is, "wait and see." But is a spontaneous cure like this common, or is it just in remission, and likely to stick again?

  • I agree the tank sensors are somewhat of a joke. Once you start using your rig and if you draw water from your fresh tank you will know where you are at without the sensors. I have found the tank full sensor to be the one that is most often working so that can be handy. On my rig's I know I can handle all the water in the fresh tank so I can just dump when I am running out of water. I equalize my tanks when necessary so I know I won't overflow. The fresh water tank is usually pretty accurate cause there ain't no solids in it!
  • The type of sensors installed OEM by the manufacturers are fairly reliable... until you use the tanks the first time. We just judge by time and usage as to when to dump. Every now and then I'll get really motivated and put 1/3 tank of fresh water in the black tank (ours has a built-in tank washer that I use to do this) and add 1/2 cup of dishwashing detergent and 1/2 cup of borax crystals before we hit the road. If the day's trip includes a bombed-out interstate or some back roads in New Mexico or Louisiana, even better! If this process cleans the sensors, they may stay that way for one or two dump cycles. Then it's back to judging by time and use... (Oh, no! It just occurred to me - we're having MORryde independent suspension installed in a few weeks. The ride will smooth out so much I probably won't get the washing machine agitation in the tanks any more.)

  • Liquid sloshes around and the sensors conduct electricity until the sides dry off, usually in a day or so.

I quit paying attention to tank meters years ago.
  • When I need to cure my black tank sensors out comes our trusty tank wand. About every 4th trip out I use the tank wand after dumping and black tank sensors are good to go. It will last a few outings before they get enough accumulation fouling sensor's accuracy.

It's amazing how much residual waste is removed when using the tank wand although we have filled and dumped black tank repeated times. Mostly use tank wand at home where we are fortunate to be able to dump our tanks, makes the process quick and easy.
  • Inaccurate readings are common - small piece of toilet paper hung up on the sensor is common problem. Won't be the last time you have an inaccurate reading - you will get used to it and eventually figure out when to dump.
  • It may not be broke. They get stuff on the sensors and give false readings.

Try the Geo Method, it may help.
