How often or what milage do the brakes need adjusting?

Ours has disc brakes on all 4 corners - no adjustment needed until replacement time. So far, we have 40K on the clock and the brake pads still look new.
If you had drum brakes, they should be self-adjusting.
Every time you back up and step on the brakes on vehicle with drum brakes, you are adjusting them.
