Air brakes, imo, are the greatest....I drive a bus,(with airbrakes) and own a 36'DP, (with 'regular' brakes) and hands down prefer the air...When I was training for driving a bus, I was all worked up about mechanics of the brakes, how they work, and on and on,(I am the least mechanical guy around) and if you just, like many have suggested, go to your motor vehicle office, and pick up a CDL manual, it has more than enough info there, that does a pretty decent job explaining all you need to know.
The main thing for me, and its been mentioned here a couple times, that's different then hydraulic brakes, is don't ever pump your brake. Slow steady pressure will do the job. Pumping the brake cuts down the air pressure, which you use to stop the vehicle. It only takes a few seconds to build back up, but if you need it and its not there,....
