A few years back, I lost a wheel/tire off my fifthweel. It was in a remote area, and I had to be towed about 75 miles. Maybe they took advantage of the situation, but the towing bill was over $500. Because of that, I really don't think towing the rig any distance would be an acceptable option.
I guess in your situation, I would see if I could find a more responsive repair shop that had a slightly shorter work time. And I would drive the car and dog home, and fly back when the repairs were completed.
Did you have any type of Emergency Road Service, like Good Sams or CoachNet? I assume that you did not which is why you had to pay $500 for the towing.
