Busted skylight window

For cryin out loud, it's always something. Today, it's a busted skylight window, the right one out of the three in our 2001 RT 200 V.

I guess a rock hit it. The glass has a focal point and is quite shattered but currently intact. I did hear a loud noise that startled me while driving, but assumed stuff flew off a counter and hit the deck.

Any suggestions of where to take the RT for a window replacement?
  • I think what I'd do is contact Roadtrek, get the part number for the "glass" AND the gasket. Then, order them from your favorite RT dealer.

With parts in had, either your local RV dealer, or a reputable glass replacement company, or you (if you have the requisite DIY skills) should be able to replace the broken glass.

I'd think the key part is the gasket since your existing gasket has been in place, and in the weather, for a loooooooong time.
  • When mine broke a glass company replaced it with lexan one.

  • Had our center window broken last week. It broke into a million little pieces but did not fall apart. Roadtrek dealer said he would be kind and get me one for $234 plus shipping plus $139.00 (1 hour labour)to install. Went to local glass shop and he charged $42.00 (cut one out of auto safety glass to fit)and let me install it in his shop, which was nice because it was -20C for the last week. He would have done lexan but it was quite a bit more. I may consider it in the future because it won't break like glass.
  • If you cannot get a glass shop to cut one for you - some will and some will not - you need to have a Roadtrek dealer order one for you or call the RT factory in Kitchner, Ontario and see if they will sell it to you directly. Usually, if you have the new glass any auto glass repair shop will install it.
  • arm - Sure pays to shop around a little and save some money doesn't it!
  • Thanks everybody. I'll check all options, including the lexon, something new to me, and see what shakes out.

I would have nosed around first to check out solutions, but was traveling and brain-fried so paused to hit up the forum. Thanks again for good advice.

...as an aside, I got superb advice and references on replacing a stripped window gear recently and will update that thread after the task is complete (waiting on weather).
  • DH looked over the window and the construct around it and is going to get appropriate glass cut and replace it himself. He did speak to an RV guy in Nacogdoches who offered up a tip or two. The DH got a chuckle over arm's post...

Once the job is done, I'll post specific tips and points that may be useful if they've not already been mentioned.
  • DH installed the specially ordered auto glass this week. He had to reseat the glass in the frame, it had been done at the glass place incorrectly, allowing leaks.

He said instillation was easy. If anyone ever has any questions, he'll be glad to directly address them on this thread.

    Thanks again everybody.
