We bought our LTV Class B when we were in our golden years (I was 67 at the time) and we have had it for 11 years and have put 140K miles on it. We bought it for the same reason, i.e. to see the US. We have done that and then some (see blog in signature).
We have been quite happy with our Class B for this purpose, but I think your budget might be a little limiting. Friends of ours found a Sprinter based Class B very similar to ours (Pleasure Way) with 40K miles on it about 4 years ago for about $40K and they love it.
As others have mentioned, Class Bs may seem a little pricey but from my viewpoint and experience they are well worth it due to their compact nature and all the side effects of that. Just one opinion.
