Buying Used

I have read that when one buys new you can get anywhere from 20%to 30% of the sticker price. When buying used from a dealer like ppl or rv trader or something other company what is the percentage of discount one can expect? From none to what ever, what is your experience. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

  • I have bought two RV's used (private sale) and the current one new from a dealer. I think I did fairly well on the Newmar but gently used is typically the smarter play.
  • I bought from a consignment about a month or so ago. I got it for about 15% below their original asking price. They had dropped the price about 10% after it had been on the lot for about 2 months. They accepted my offer which was about 15% below their original price. I am extremely happy with my purchase and I guess the seller was also.
  • Each situation is different when you buy used so there are a lot of things to consider.

First, are you buying from a private seller or a dealer. It makes a difference.

If buying from private seller, are they upside down on the coach or do they have equity in it? Are they under duress or just getting out of RVing or moving on to another unit? How have they maintained the unit the way it was supposed to be maintained? Does everything work?

If you're buying from a dealer, did they trade for it or buy it at auction? How much do they have in the unit? Do they have to put any money into it to make it sellable? How long has it been on the lot.

Buyers have to do a lot of research and expect to pay for things like inspections to make sure you are getting a good deal on a good coach. We paid for an inspection, then walked on the deal when things were found that we weren't comfortable with.
  • like ppl ,just make a reasonable offer, low ball will insultae the owner and they might not come down at all. do all your home work look on google and others see what that rv is selling for. and double inspect the rv, ANY SIGN of water leak run, even though they tell you its been repaired.
  • PPL is a consignment place and all transactions go through the owner of the RV. We sold ours there within a month for the asking price.
