I would start by reading Johnny T's post on first time buyers by clicking on Class A in the box at the top on the right. The joke about retirement, well actually it's not a joke: Twice the husband on 1/2 the money in 1/10th the space. Oops, that's 1/20th the space. It worries me when I see full timers looking at 38' MHs. The shorter the rig the smaller the tanks... have to dump and refill more often. Cuts down on how long you can go off the grid... boondocking. After many rainy days and regardless of how lovey dovey you'll wish you had a bigger MH
I started with a used 36' DP because of posts on here that 36' was the max for NP, SP, USFS, ....... did not take long to learn that was not true so traded for a 40' and 13 years ago 42' plus I built my MH bay long enough for 45'. Buy more MH than you think you need...ONE TIME, not like me.$$$$
In Yellowstone it's easy to make a 42' become a 40' for their max length sites:W... would be harder to make a 45' into a 40'. In the East and in CA it's a bigger problem finding Public CG sites big enough (not impossible) and in the West it's very easy. My 42' has a slightly better turning radius than a non tag 40' as the drive axle wheelbase is shorter... not so for 45'. It is amazing how much better a tag axle coach handles even though my 40' was a RR8R Beaver. There is a lot of truth that once you have a tag, you will not go back plus having 9000+ lbs of CCC makes it too easy to keep too much stuff. If I had to replace this MH I'd probably go with a 44 or 45'.
Rarely do you hear from the owner of a BIG rig that you should buy something smaller. Not sure how the owner of a 30' knows where I can get my 42'. Yes, it has the scratches to prove it as we boondock often, a good reason to buy used. My favorite self serve USFS CG in the Tetons says 28' max and that is probably true of all but three of the sites. One of those anyone could get a 60' into, but the other two takes some skill. Not sure who decides what size rig will fit in public CG's sites, but they do not own a DP.
By arriving late Sunday or early Monday most of the weekenders have gone home vastly increasing your chances of finding a site big enough in public CGs. I cannot remember in the last 5-6 years not getting into my first choice Public CG out West. Granted with google maps/earth you can take a pretty good look before you get there.
Did I say "Buy more MH than you think you need...ONE TIME!!!" :h
