It also depends on the kind of camping you're going to do and what the climate is like. When we bought our MH, it was 8 years old and the generator clock showed 48 hours total running time. In 8 years, that was probably all "exercise the generator once a month for 30 minutes" time.
We've had the rig 4 years and we've used the generator once, when the overnight low was going to be around 85 degrees. Our rig is a 30A set-up and you can't run both a/cs on shore power. The genny's an Onan 5500, under the bedroom on the driver's side. Sweating like a pig all night was enough to put up with the noise. People I know who are much heavier users of their rigs, have the "Genturi" exhaust system for use while docked. This puts the exhaust noise up above the roof, which cuts down on what you can hear in the bedroom.
Two years ago, after cardiac surgery, I didn't get out to do the monthly exercise for four months. The generator hasn't run since - it won't start.
We're going to put the MH on the market shortly, so I'll have to get someone to fix it.
