Can't wait for a Class B, might just get a van

It's illogical to assume that he can get a better job. Most people get the best job they can. He probably has already done that.

I don't know the current state of financial aid. Is it possible to go to school and train for a better job, like it was when I was young? Or has gov funding for education been cut o much that only well off people can study?

Whatever you do, don't go to a private college. Stick with state run: community college or university.
