Many people winter out of state and the homeowners policy is not considered as covering a "vacant" house. If your belongings are still in the house it is considered "unoccupied" and as long as you make sure there is a source of heat to prevent freezing (or winterize) and have someone checking your property it is perfectly ok to be aways for several months at a time. You should always be honest with your agent so that you can make sure you do have the proper coverage, and do not lie on a claim - you could be accused of fraud and prosecuted. Be honest!
