check engine light comes on

We have a used 2003 American tradition 75,000 miles on it. Check engine light comes on after it's driven awhile and it loses about a quarter of the power. I pull over , check everything, turn it off, sometimes light goes off sometimes it does not. Last time it happened I had just refueled. Took it to shop and they could find nothing on the diagnostics. This does not happen every time we drive it, I would say every other road trip. Anyone have any ideas??

  • Get a Scan Gauge reader, then you will know why the CEL is coming on, it will also tell you lots of other neat stuff.
  • I too am going to assume its a diesel coach, my advice is NOT for a gas engine.

If you can, please post what engine type you have.

Is it simply a loss of power? Does it rev up as if a gear was dropped? Anything out of the ordinary in terms of shaking, stuttering, misfiring or strange noises?
  • "cowboy lineman".....frequently, issues like yours are fuel filter related. If your filters haven't been changed in the last 10K miles, I would change them first before spending any money at a shop.

    Catalytic converter blockage ?

Lose of power can be caused by this type of thing.

Also, the fuel pump may be failing.

I bet it is a diesel so it doesn't have a Catalytic converter to be blocked but it could be fuel filters.

  • Light is off by the time it goes to the shop shop. Guys take it out and drive it and light does not come back on. Thanks for the tip, going to get the reader..
