I drove school bus in ND for 13 years. Since busing started in ND, way back when, there has been exactly ONE death in a school bus, without seat belts.
I have no idea, but I would imagine that many 100's millions of miles have been driven in that time. One death. All school districts across the state. Rural areas. Large cities. All of them.
Pretty darn safe to me!
One of the factors in a crash is the ratio.. 2,000 to 4,000 pounds of car gives a 22,000 motor home a clear 5 or 10 to one advantage.
One interesting thing though... A specific bus I know can hold at most 70 people sitting perhaps 80 SRO... but when one of them is involved in a crash,,,,, Suddenly there are over 100 people on the half full at most bus. How'd that happen (This is a public transit bus).. And by the way I'm speaking of an actual accident).
