Class A travel without interstates

Coming into Chicago and then going north were the worst roads I've seen as for potholes and traffic and I generally don't mind traffic. If I need to be somewhere, I take the main highways, if not I take the smaller roads. The only problem with the smaller roads if you have to pay more attention to the roads for sharp corners, driveways, farm equipment, etc, so at times you don't get to look at the scenery as much.
