Actually it's more complicated than that, although the fact that you can go anywhere an automobile can go is part of it probably. But I've heard it explained as the higher cost of building the RV components within the body of a van as opposed to in a box that is part of the conversion. And the cost of the van chassis is higher than the cost of building the fiberglass box.
Personally I like being totally enclosed in the steel body of a Sprinter van although not all class Bs retain the steel body, especially prior to the larger Sprinter vans and their newer competitors.
