Adding: Actually how the tank is top'd off doesn't matter as long as you do the same both at the beginning and at end of the vacation. How you fill the tank in between during the trip doesn't matter. On occasion you won't fill the tank as some gas stations limit your credit card fuel purchase. It's all about total miles driven and total gallons purchased. Then calculate off those totals to get your trip average.
