Tire failures can be catastrophic. You won't break the frame or the axles running heavy (the front end can wear out faster though). You will have sub-par braking, but you can compensate for that with your driving style.
If you can transfer more weight forward, the 2008+ front axle is rated for 5,000 pounds and also has bigger brakes and an improved radius arm setup and sway bar. QuadVan and Quigley keep new take-off units to re-sell, and this ends up being less than just doing a brake job and ball joint job on your existing axle.
