Heat shields are not what caused the problems, wrapping the exhaust pipes/catalytic converters in heat blocking wraps did.
A heat shield is a piece of metal suspended between the heat producer and the floor of the cab. It does not actually touch the piping. The pipe gets just as much cooling air flow as ever, so its temperature does not increase any. The heat shield just blocks the upward migration of the heat.
