Even when using a jumper to make the clutch engage, the system would not cool. I'm guessing there is no refrigerant in the system, and I can't get it to take refrigerant from a DIY kit either.
I'm guessing the issue with it taking refrigerant is one ome of two things: valve stem in the service port is bad, or there is s blockage near the service port.
The next issue is where the refrigerant went that used to be in there. I'm considering just taking it to a professional, and having it all done correctly.
The system needs to be dry, clean and in a vacuum before you add refrigerant. If the system is at atmospheric pressure you may not get any refrigerant in the system. The posts advising that the high, low or other system's automatic safety devices are keeping the refrigerant from entering and doing it's job are correct.
It sounds to me like the system had/has a small leak and the refrigerant slowly leaked out and now you are trying to force the system to work without refrigerant.
There should be a dryer in the system. If enough moisture entered the system that dryer could be plugged. The dryer is a cylinder about 2 1/2 inches in diameter and about 10 inches long. The top should have a sight glass that will allow you to see the refrigerant moving through the system if all is working properly.
