i wonder if the braking wasn't a contributing factor.....not sure i really saw him turn AWAY from the blown tire....worst thing you can ever do is hit the brakes (immediately) !
Yea that's what I do. One hand tight on the wheel. The other tight around my beer. - mike_brezExplorer

If you watch the video closely, it appears that the vehicle was headed left until it got to the concrete ditch and cable barrier. The barrier did deflect the coach somewhat and it ran straight along it for awhile. Then I think it appears that the cable barrier actually is what flipped the coach over in to the on coming lanes of traffic. I don't think that the driver could have turned the wheel to cause the abrupt flip to the left that put it on it's side over the cables. I think the cable snagged the front end and flipped it.
A lot of thinking going on here. - rgatijnet1Explorer IIIIf you watch the video closely, it appears that the vehicle was headed left until it got to the concrete ditch and cable barrier. (Just retired from there again for my third retirement.) It shows that you steer towards the good tire and drive through it. You only slow down after you have regained control and can safely stop..
On edit; the video is posted on the thread about the MH hitting the house. - turbojimmyExplorer

We sure hope that we are but it's not realistic.
If you watch the video very slowly (hit start and stop quickly), you can almost get a frame by frame movement of the coach. He hit is brakes more than I thought (you can see the lights on the toad too).
I don't know why the coach veered left at the very end, believe me, I'm sure he was making every effort possible to straighten that coach out.
I try to put myself in people's shoes and give them the benefit of the doubt.
Also, I don't care for the cable barriers either. Trying to hold a 30,000# plus vehicle is difficult.

You're right, I apologize. It was a little Monday Morning Quarterbacking. I hope to never be in that situation. I didn't see any braking or steering, but you don't know what's going on in the cab. - Mr_Mark1Explorer

I don't get the cable barrier haters. While perhaps not as effective as a solid barrier, they clearly "redirected" the path of the rig. He didn't shoot into oncoming lanes at speed. Instead it rolled and slid onto the lanes. Without the cables, he would have shot across that median and into oncoming traffic at a rate of speed that would have given oncoming drivers little to no time to react. And, he would have shot into the woods on the other side probably killing both the driver and passenger. I think the cables did an effective job. The driver, on the other hand, did not. I really didn't see any sort of corrective action at all. Maybe he was in the back making a sandwich?

I'm not sure where you drive but I would rather see something that stops the vehicles that can do the most damage to on coming traffic than something like this that just stops automobiles. I see a lot of trucks on the highways and a simple search of the internet will turn up many many big rig wrecks on the interstates. - DuctapeExplorerHe rolled right over those cables and never even slowed. Redirected? I think not.
