This is a civil matter, not a criminal matter. The police will not do anything about this. Calling your insurance company to at least get them in the loop is a good idea--maybe they will pay to have a 3rd party mechanic document the damage before the work is done.
In most states the police will take report just like a motor vehicle accident. Does not have to be a criminal matter.
