Hummmm... not sure if you're confused or I am. Typically, it's me. In any case, the DEF is NOT for the engine...it's for the exhaust system. And I'm not sure why you would have an "engine" indicator when you are low on DEF.
My coach has a dashboard digital readout that shows the level of fluid in the DEF tank, plus there is a gauge on the tank itself. I usually always add the DEF when the two gauges show I'm down to around 1/2 tank. I would NEVER let it run down to where you get a notice that you only have 10 more starts, just like I would never let my diesel fuel run down to 1/4 tank.
