First off, your owners' manual is the definitive source of information on your vehicle....not an RV group. You need to learn what those indicator lights mean and what to do with them. The Sprinter manual is very complete and informative. Read it and become familiar with your vehicle. It is a wise investment in time.
I have the older (big) DEF tank. If the light comes on I put DEF in. If I'm going on a big trip I may throw some more in so I don't have to worry bout it on a trip. Mine will give me 20 starts after the DEF light comes on.
DEF is Diesel Exhaust Fluid. It is a urea solution that is injected into the exhaust (in conjunction with a catalyst) to help reduce oxides of nitrogen.
