Just had another thought. The elevated (relative to U.S. market) asking prices I see for U.S. vehicles in Europe could reflect substantial import duties having been paid. I'm remembering the guarantees/bonds required for temporary use, and what a friend in Norway had to go through to get a U.S. vehicle imported.
