I had considered a unit that was 6-8 years old but I have fear of things not working in the unit and cost of ownership (maintenance, repairs, fuel consumption etc...) Do you think I am wrong to be so concerned?

Yes, I do think you are wrong to be concerned...
While there are items with a finite "use" or "life" such as tires and brakes, many many of the things in our RV's are destined to live for 2 days for every day they have all ready lived.
Most things will fail in the first year, or never ever fail.
