This is one of those subjects that gets discussed on a very regular basis.
IMO, it really comes down to what you are using the RV for. If you plan fulltime, get the largest you can and plan on private RV parks. If you plan on just weekends, and the occassional 1-2 week trip, a shorter RV makes more sense, as you will probably be visiting state parks more.
I have owned RVs from 19 - 40 feet. Currently have a 30' RV. What I found is that as you get significantly above 30', the harder it becomes to find spaces.
For example, a state park MIGHT accept 40 footers, but out of the 50 spots they have, only 2-3 can accommodate a 40 footer and those spaces fill up fast. If you RV is only 25 feet, than most likely you can fit in 40 of those 50 spots.
The other big issue with bigger RV's is negotiating the narrow campground roads.
When we had our our 40 footer, we mostly stayed in private RV parks due to the reasons mentioned above. When we had our 19 footer, we mostly stayed in state parks etc and rarely stayed in private campgrounds. With our 30 footer, we plan on staying mostly in state and national campgrounds.
