Diesel engine problem

I have a service engine light and an OBD code referencing the mass air sensor. So far the info I'm getting is that there is an intermittent sudden change in the sensor reading.

Trying to find a qualified mechanic in my area that knows this engine.

Does anyone have experience with this problem or have any ideas?
  • Probably just needs some cleaning inside the throttle body. Easily done. Spray available at any auto parts store.
  • Just follow directions on the MAS spray can. Don't forget to spray the plug too. If you have a oiled air cleaner filter (K&N) get rid of it and use a dry filter.
  • it appears that the problem has been identified: The intake tube at the front of the turbo was disconnected, due to sloppy work by a mechanic last year.
  • 3 different OBD scanners show that the Cat Converter monitor (in the ECU) does not finish. Because of this, attempts at Smog Test will fail.

I'm told I have to drive a very long distance on cruise control at 55-65 mph for it to complete. I've done a 60 mile and a 100 mile drive but no luck so far.

    Any suggestions?
  • Further information: I have been told I have to drive long distance on cruise control at 55-65 mph.

Finally I did a long enough drive. At about 125 miles on the trip meter, the Cat Conv Monitor set OK. I then proceeded direction to my Smog Tester and now I'm good to go.
