Diesel powertrains 2000-2017. Collation of data/issues?

PLEASE, do not spend a lot of time in this thread on specifics (unless you really want to).
I am looking for write ups or articles on the different diesel power plants offered over the last decade and a half or so. I am pretty sure someone must have done the leg work already.

The good, the bad, the changes, the pitfalls, what to avoid, etc, etc. CAT, CUMMINS, MAXXFORCE, DETROIT, and...?

I have read more than a few individual posts about the pros and cons of each, tried to piece together some information, BUT I thought that is I were looking at doing more.....maybe someone else already has?

Anyone have a link or website, or something that gets into the merits of them all?

If not...maybe a retirement project for me next year.

Thanks!
  • Personally I think your putting way too much thinking in.
Kodern diesels by and large are far more reliable and cleaner burning than days of old. In some cases modern, diesels are cleaner than gas motors.
Now, you really need to break this down some. Are you asking about class 3/4, or 7/8 motors. There is a difference you know.
  • I want you to think of something... Diesels are often very expensive. The engines and trannys are high dollar. Most mfg's are probably not going to build a BAD coach around a diesel truck.

In fact, I really don't know of any diesel that is "cheap" or "bad" so to say.

If you want to just know of a good brand that isn't the most $ ever, but very good quality and middle of the road, I would go with a Tiffin.
  • My 2002 ford with a 7.3 diesel is going up in value. It is worth half what I paid for it now.
