Plugged air filter will cause the engine to smoke very heavily. A LOT of black smoke. Plugged fuel filters will not.

If you are losing boost due to a leak in the Air Charged Cooler (ACC), associated tubing or hoses you need to get it fix ASAP. We had friends that had a cracked ACC (leaked) as it caused the turbo to over spin (no back pressure) and damaged it. So in addition to the ACC repair they had to replace the turbo.

Check the rubber hoses on the booster. They do get pinholes in them quite often.

For the exhaust temp to go up there too much fuel and not enough air. Turbo is going bad not supplying air, hose to or from air charge cooler broken, or air filter very dirty and clogged. Check all this.

That when you parked and set the brakes, they might not have fully released - that they may still be partially engaged and therefor called dragging.

I don't think this is your problem because if you got up to 50MPH and the brakes, or one of them, was dragging, you should have smelled it from getting too hot. But to be safe and rule out as many things as you can, the next time you drive for a ways, stop to feel each brake with your hand and sniff to see if you smell anything.

A little sluggish and now 50 mph... change the fuel filters. Lack of fuel will show up as lack of boost which results in lack of power.

Your description of the problem is a little wide open and could be several things. At first glance, a turbo or turbo hose issue could be your problem as others have posted, but you always want to start with the simple things. Typically, the most common issue people see are dirty fuel filter(s) causing your problem. If you haven't replaced your filter(s) in the last year, I would start there. It's inexpensive and one of the first things a mechanic is going to check/change.
