We're fulltimer's raised in the Elkhart County area. We're here now at Elkhart Campground, spend part of each summer here visiting family. Not signed up for the rally though, due to the many tempting things to eat with my extremely low sodium diet. Scottiemom doesn't want me to end up in the ER again, looking like the Pillsbury Doughboy.
This is a route that I would recommend for a novice to the area with an RV, it avoids most narrow roads and towns. For example: US33 is somewhat narrow with small shoulders and crooked from 10 miles north of FT Wayne to US6 and a real pain in Goshen Indiana between 2:30PM and 5:30PM due to plants changing shifts, causing sometimes a 1/2 mile plus back up on the east side of town.
The US20 bypass can also be used to avoid the Toll Road @ South Bend, but that entails driving East to CR17N to CR6W to CR9N to CR4E, driving about 8 miles further with 8-10 stop lights. Again it can have heavy traffic traffic in the mornings and between 2:30 and 5:30 in the afternoon, especially if you hit a train between US20 and CR6.
You would need to check construction on the given route. I know that US31 has some construction for about 6-7 miles north of I-465 @ Indianapolis, been that way a few times this summer for doctor's appointments.
Here's my route.
Safe travels.
