You guys want in on a secret about residential burglaries and thefts? The vast majority are committed by your neighbors! Mostly your neighbors kids, but sometimes the adults are in on it too. Although clearly some burglars do go to strange neighborhoods and break into houses, a lot of them like stealing from their neighbors simply because they are familiar with the neighborhood and are comfortable in the neighborhood. Also they can roam all over the neighborhood without anybody getting suspicious because they live there.
Somebody got into my unlocked motorhome a couple of years ago in my backyard while I was in the house. I'm about 98% confident it was the teenage son of one of my neighbors, but I never could prove it. So don't always rely on your neighbors to watch your place!
