Rangers couldn't care less what(if any) chemicals one uses in a porta potty, especially since nearly all privys these days are pumped out by the same truck that's pumping out the RV dump stations in the same locale.

What they DO care about/prohibit is whole-RV dumping- that because it fills up the privy. The other privy prohibition is against putting garbage therein, which means that one can NOT throw wagbags etc. down that hole.

formaldehyde? When we use the port-a-potty I never put chemicals in it. Dump it every day, quick rinse, couple cap fulls of bleach, 1/2 cup water and live in peace! Well, I guess bleach is a chemical!

I lived in my class B van for three months last summer. Had no problem using a Thetford Porta Potty. I usually empitied it every couple of days at the dump station.. Just took a couple of minutes.

Wag Bags or Double Doodie Bags - these have many names and are all the same - a double bag system containing a special powder that solidifies liquids and deodorizes whatever goes into the bag. You can buy these in most camping stores and Walmart sells them in the camping department. They cost about $11 for six bags and one bag holds a lot - change the bag at least once per day, however. These bags are made to "go" directly in - most fit into the toilet seat/bucket or frame potties and also will fit into a standard RV toilet. The bag once double sealed is legal to dispose of in any trash or garbage receptacle. We use these when we travel in the winter and have winterized our plumbing. Use public facilities when you can and use these when you must be inside the RV.

If it is a "Wag Bag" system bag they are EPA approved for ordinary trash disposal. We use them whitewater rafting and have proven to be the best system for a small group. For larger groups we use a canister system that has to dumped in a sanitary system of some sort.
