A bike might be a good alternative in some areas, Florida comes to mind as it is very flat, but Mount Rushmore? Not for me!
The area around Mount Rushmore is very hilly. The grades are steep, long and the roads have narrow shoulders. Some people would love the climbs and the physical challenge and if that is you, go for it.
If you are more of a flat land biker then a car rental might be more suitable. If you have two drivers then you don't really need a car rental company that will deliver to your campground. Stop in Rapid City, rent the car and you or your co-pilot can drive the rental to the campground.
It is a beautiful area. South Dakota has so much to offer in terms of history and the residents are friendly and welcoming.
Enjoy and safe travels!
Where are the grades in Rushmore? I have both east and west mountain books but SD is not mentioned.
